The 6th of September 2024 marks a significant milestone in Dadaab’s development, with the stakeholders’ meeting setting the foundation for improved water governance. The establishment of the Dadaab Water and Sanitation Company,(Dawasco) under the County Government of Garissa and in alignment with the Water Act of 2016, holds promise for better services and infrastructure in the county. This will likely enhance the quality of life for residents and refugees alike.

The selection committee for Dadaab Water and Sanitation Company Limited (DAWASCO) convened their inaugural meeting at Palm Oasis Hotel in Garissa. The primary agenda was the selection of the board of directors, a crucial step towards operationalizing DAWASCO and enhancing water governance in the Dadaab municipality.

A three-day sensitization workshop on Handover and Water Governance was successfully conducted from 7th to 9th July 2026 at Hashi Palace Hotel, Dadaab Town.
The workshop brought together key stakeholders from the water sector, including representatives from UNICEF Kenya, WASREB, the County Government of Garissa, the National Government, local leaders, and other sector partners.
The objective of the workshop was to enhance stakeholders’ understanding of the water service handover process, strengthen water governance, and promote effective collaboration among all institutions involved in the management and delivery of water and sanitation services in Dadaab.
Participants engaged in discussions on governance frameworks, institutional roles and responsibilities, regulatory requirements, and strategies for ensuring sustainable, efficient, and accountable water service delivery. The workshop also provided an opportunity for stakeholders to exchange experiences, address implementation challenges, and reaffirm their commitment to supporting improved water governance in Dadaab.
The workshop concluded with a shared commitment by all stakeholders to continue working together to ensure a smooth handover process and strengthen water service delivery for the benefit of the residents of Dadaab.
DRC Headquarters Mission Visits DAWASCO to Strengthen WASH Systems in Dadaab
Dadaab, 7th and 8thSeptember 2026 — Dadaab Water and Sanitation Company Limited (DAWASCO) hosted a delegation from the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) headquarters in Copenhagen during a two-day mission to Dadaab held on 7–8 September 2026.
The mission, led by the DRC Kenya Head of Programmes, brought together DRC’s Global Sector Lead for Shelter, WASH and Infrastructure, Global WASH Advisor, and Global Lead for Systems Approaches.
The engagement focused on understanding the existing WASH, shelter and infrastructure gaps, priorities and institutional systems supporting service delivery in Dadaab. During the courtesy visit to DAWASCO, the delegation engaged with the Company on its mandate, operational environment, current challenges and opportunities for strengthening sustainable water and sanitation services.
The discussions provided an important platform for sharing experiences and exploring opportunities for stronger institutional coordination, systems strengthening and sustainable WASH service delivery for both refugee and host communities in Dadaab.
The mission also included field visits to selected areas, with DAWASCO participating to provide technical and institutional perspectives on the local WASH infrastructure and service delivery context.
DAWASCO appreciates DRC’s continued engagement and commitment to strengthening inclusive, resilient and sustainable WASH systems in Dadaab.
